A showcase for Scottish timber

The David Douglas Pavilion

Client: Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Douglas was a plant hunter and the resulting pavilion – whilst acknowledging his exploration achievements beyond Scotland, was also designed to draw attention to the opportunities provided by Scottish timber. The pavilion was constructed of locally procured Douglas fir – the tree named after him. The entire building was constructed from local sources and included not just the Douglas fir but also Scottish oak, ash and elm. The roof finish is from heartwood of larch.

The pavilion has become a major local attraction and as well as winning architectural awards, has been adopted as a focal point for a range of activities including marriage ceremonies.
