The SHIRTS Study (Sports Halls in Rural Towns in Scotland)
Client: Scottish Sports Council
The study split into two main parts. One part involved identifying local needs (as opposed to wish-list) and to this end a mini business plan tool was developed, for the participants to engage with.
The second part of the exercise involved the development of a set of design guidance and technical advice notes. – Much of this work has been picked up on in much more detail in subsequent years in specialist studies on underfloor heating, natural lighting, innovative ventilation methods and innovative materials and indoor climate design.
The practical outcome was to be that one of the communities would be selected for a demonstration project, to test out the advice and the approach. In the end two communities acquired facilites – at Callander (by Gaia Architects) and Turriff (by Aberdeenshire Council)
